MINI GUIDE: WHAT TO VISIT IN CATANIA
Discover all the points of interest to visit in Catania
Catania, the capital of Baroque and a UNESCO World Heritage city, has a millennial history and unique panoramas in the world. The Sicilian city is located at the foot of Mount Etna and overlooks the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.
A weekend in the second most populous city in Sicily is ideal for visiting the historic center, the beaches of unique beauty, and towns like Acireale and Aci Castello, without forgetting an excursion to the most active volcano in Europe, Etna.
Starting from the center of Catania, the first stop is Piazza del Duomo with the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha, the Patroness of the city, and the beautiful Church of the Badia of Sant'Agata, with its dome. Also in Piazza Duomo, you will find the Elephant Fountain, the symbol of Catania, and the beautiful Amenano Fountain. A few steps away, don't miss the Fish Market, one of the most renowned fish markets in Italy. Here you can purchase excellent freshly caught fish, but above all, you can have a noteworthy experience in one of the most characteristic places in the city.
Continue the city tour with a walk on via Etnea, the main artery of the Catania's historic center. Here admire the various baroque architectures and the shop windows of all kinds of stores for a bit of shopping. Continue to Piazza Università and then to Piazza Stesicoro, where you will find the remains of the Roman Amphitheater. Between the two squares, visit the Collegiate Basilica, the Church of the Minorites and Villa Bellini.
Reach another of the main squares of the Catania's historic center, Piazza Teatro Massimo where you will find the elegant lyric theater named after the composer Vincenzo Bellini and conclude your visit at the Historical Museum of the Landing in Sicily 1943 with the exhibition that tells the story of the last months of fighting that took place in Sicily during World War II before the German retreat.
For a dip in the splendid blue sea of Catania, reach La Plaia, 18 kilometers of coastline south of the city and pass through San Marco di Catalbiano, Praiola di Giarre, Foce Simeto, Marina di Cottone Fiumefreddo. In these places, you will find equipped beaches, pebble beaches, and many bays. Always on the coast, reach Aci Castello, a terrace on the Mediterranean, and visit the ruins of the Norman castle semi-perched onthe lava stone and admire one of the most extraordinary views of the Mediterranean. Immediately after Aci Castello, arrive at Acitrezza for a walk in the Myth. Famous for Giovanni Verga's Malavoglia with their stories set in this area and for the story of the cyclops Polyphemus and the large stones he threw at Ulysses, which have become the dark stacks that characterize the most beautiful seafront in Catania.
If you love trekking, a must-do is an excursion on Etna for a truly unique experience. You can be accompanied by a professional guide who leads you on safe routes and to the most panoramic places with historical and geological notions.
In Catania, after admiring its wonderful Baroque architecture, the sea, and its volcano, all that remains is to taste the delicious culinary products typical of the region. Try the arancini, the cannoli, the very good granitas, the seafood dishes, the meatballs and the horse meat sausages.
Catania is a city that always makes you dream, but even more so in the summer.
