MINI GUIDE: WHAT TO VISIT IN GALLIPOLI
Discover all the places of interest to visit in Gallipoli
Gallipoli is the pearl of the Ionian Sea, a seaside town in Salento, Puglia, ancient and fascinating, ready to be discovered. It is the ideal summer destination for a holiday full of fun, beautiful sea, and good food. But Gallipoli is not just paradisiacal beaches crowded in summer, it is above all an ancient city rich in monuments, churches and a suggestive historic center. A city divided into two, the modern part and the ancient part are in perfect harmony, giving Gallipoli a romantic and unique appearance. A territory rich in history, art, culture and food and wine excellence that makes it one of the most sought after places in Salento.
Start the visit from the historic center of Gallipoli, which is located on a limestone island and is therefore completely surrounded by the sea and connected by a bridge. Discover the ancient streets, the palaces and the baroque style churches scattered throughout the village. During the walk through the streets of the center of Gallipoli, don't miss the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, in baroque style, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi known for the wooden construction that depicts the thief crucified next to Jesus, the Seminary Palace, Venneri Palace and the suggestive Churches of Purità and Santa Maria degli Angeli. In the village of Old Gallipoli, you cannot miss the charm of history and local customs. Also important are the dishes of the local cuisine to taste in one of the many seafood restaurants and the fish market near the port. Finally, reach the Angioino Aragonese Castle and the highest part of the Castle also called rivellino, which during the summer turns into an open-air cinema. From here you have an unparalleled view of the city and the surrounding sea truly unique. Not far from the castle admire the Greek Fountain the oldest fountain in Italy that divides the old part and the new village characterized by a long street full of shops and clubs.
For a dip in the crystal clear sea reach the picturesque coves protected by rich vegetation or the wonderful fine sand beaches that you find all around the urban perimeter. The most famous is the Beach of Purità or La Puritate, as it is called by the locals, very loved and frequented especially for the great natural spectacle it offers.
Another beach with fine and golden sand to reach is Baia Verde about 1.5 km south of Gallipoli where you can enjoy a crystal clear sea and the typical scents of the Mediterranean scrub. About 2 km from Gallipoli you cannot miss a small corner of paradise: Punta della Suina, a beach that gives you really suggestive sunsets over the sea. Finally, take a walk in the Isola Sant'Andrea Reserve, a protected area with a dense pine forest, and arrive at the Punta Pizzo Beach, a trulyunique place in the world for its rocky and sandy coast, surrounded by the scents of thyme and rosemary.
If you visit Gallipoli in addition to the architectural, artistic and natural beauties you absolutely must try the various dishes of the Salento tradition very rich and appetizing. Don't miss the pasticciotti, a pastry filled with custard baked in the oven, the fried calzones, the rustics, the pasta with seafood, the fish fry, the spumoni, typical Salento ice creams and the many almond paste sweets.
For an unforgettable experience you can participate in a ronda called tammurriata in which the drumming musicians, flutes or guitars gather in the middle of the street and form a circle inside which they dance or participate in the very famous Taranta Festival and dance the pizzica. And if you love to have fun until late at night, Gallipoli is a bit like Ibiza. You can participate in numerous events, festivals and guests with international DJs who perform in the many clubs and discos in the area.
