What to see in Liguria

Genoa

An open-air museum with one of the largest historic centers in Europe, with narrow alleys all to explore. Genoa is famous for the Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006: these Renaissance and Baroque palaces are particularly beautiful to see for their frescoed halls, gardens, and the art collections they contain. If you're in Genoa, don't forget to taste the famous pesto alla Genovese and drop by the extraordinary Genoa Aquarium, the largest in Italy and home to 12,000 marine animals.

The Five Lands (Cinque Terre)

Coves and villages nestled among hills, terraces overlooking the sea built with dry stone walls: the Cinque Terre are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. A jagged rock outline plunging into an azure sea, spurs of rock interrupted only by picturesque villages and dreamy beaches, the cinque terre is a place to be lived intensely at any season of the year: here the colors stand out, are vivid and create a landscape unique in the world.

Monterosso

Among the must-see villages of the Cinque Terre is that of Monterosso al mare. Here you will find a wide sandy beach in which to spend hours of relaxation, but also an evocative village to visit: the historic center is formed by the caruggi, the typical alleys of Liguria, narrow and full of restaurants, souvenir stores, ceramics and food and wine products to try.

Riomaggiore

A village in the Cinque Terre where typical Mediterranean vegetation dominates and where the houses overlooking the sea are painted in bright colors and stand tall. In the center you can see the Riomaggiore Castle, built in 1260 on a rocky outcrop and from which you can enjoy a wonderful view.

The Gulf of Poets

This is the nickname for the Gulf of La Spezia, and it is an inlet on the coast of the Ligurian Sea at the eastern end of Liguria. Here you will find Porto Venere, a rather scenic village with a church overlooking the sea, Byron's cave, and the Doria Castle. In addition, you can see the islands of Palmaria, Tino, Tinetto, and even the Cinque Terre. On the opposite side of the gulf awaits you the village of Lerici, frequented by the writer David Herbert Lawrence, the writer and painter George Sand, the poet Lord Byron, and the writer Percy Bysshe Shelley, among others.

Camogli

The Pearl of the Paradise Gulf, just 15 kilometers from Portofino, Camogli is an evocative resort with a picture-perfect harbor, a basilica, that of Santa Maria Assunta, directly on the sea and with its interior richly decorated in gold, and the breathtaking medieval castle. Camogli is a place reminiscent of a postcard, a palette full of colors that will leave you stunned. Between Camogli and Portofino also stands the splendid Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte, a magical place to say the least.

Portofino

A very popular and world-famous Ligurian resort precisely because of its characteristic beauty. Portofino has in its historic center a perfectly preserved typical Roman colony, colorful houses, a small square full of stores, restaurants, cafes, and has often been the set for film masterpieces such as The Wolf of Wall Street. It should also be included in the itinerary for its Brown Castle, with evocative interior rooms, and Mount Portofino, the peak that rises more than 600 meters.

Sanremo

Finally, you cannot miss a visit to the city of Sanremo, a peculiar town full of boutiques and stores. Here you can see the Riviera of Flowers and take a walk along the Promenade dedicated to Tsarina Maria Aleksandrovna, wife of Alexander II. The emperor chose Sanremo as his vacation spot and gave the town the palm trees that are still present on the promenade today.
