Mini Guide, what to visit in Vicenza and Brescia
Among the most important cities in the Veneto region, capital of the province of the same name, Vicenza represents one of the finest historical and architectural jewels in northern Italy. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the city owes its fame mainly to the prestigious name of Andrea Palladio, who here gave free rein to his genius by designing and creating some wonders known throughout the world. A walk in the historic center allows you to appreciate many of his works: from the Basilica Palladiana, in the central Piazza dei Signori, to the Teatro Olimpico, from Palazzo Breganze to Palazzo Chiericati, which today houses an art gallery. Vicenza is full of churches and basilicas, among which the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunciata and the church of Santa Corona stand out, which among other things houses the tomb of Palladio. In the city we also find valuable museums (above all the Pinacoteca, the Archaeological Naturalistic Museum and the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Resistance) and also several enjoyable green areas: among these we mention Campo Marzo, the Querini park and the Salvi Gardens. But the beauties of Vicenza also extend beyond the confines of the centre, up to the Villa Almerico-Capra, known as "La Rotonda", a stupendous Palladian country house, and the Basilica of Monte Berico, perched on a hill overlooking the city. A lively tourist destination throughout the year, Vicenza comes alive in particular on the occasion of the many cultural events it hosts: the month of May sees the organization of the Biblical Festival and the New Conversation Vicenza Jazz festival. Not only culture: the city also offers many possibilities for shopping, especially in the many designer shops scattered between Corso Fogazzaro and Corso Palladio and inside the imposing Palladio and Le Piramidi shopping centres, 10 minutes from the historic centre. In recent decades, Vicenza has also established itself as an important industrial centre, home to important companies in the textile, metalworking and above all precious metal and jewelery sectors: it is not for nothing that it is defined as the "Italian capital of gold" and hosts every year the VicenzaOro Fair, an international appointment. What do you eat good in Vicenza? The king of the table is undoubtedly the tasty Vicenza-style cod, but the local cuisine offers many other dishes based on the excellence of the area: Veneto Berico Euganeo ham, Asiago cheese, Vicenza soppressa, just to name a few. And what to put in the glass? Obviously one of the excellent DOC wines or a local grappa. Are you wondering how to reach this beautiful city? Italo allows you to get to Vicenza quickly and comfortably thanks to the new route opened on the Turin-Milan-Venice connection. What are you waiting for? Buy your Italo ticket for Vicenza now!
Are you looking for a train journey to discover Lombardy and the Po Valley? With Italo you can easily reach Brescia, one of the most important cities that unites the old and the new like few others. Brescia will surprise you with the sweet union between the old city with its traditions, and the new city, engine of the Po Valley. A proud city of its origins: it is no coincidence that it is nicknamed Lioness of Italy, a name that dates back to the ten days of resistance to the Austrian invasion during the Italian Risorgimento. Its sites of historical importance have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, such as the monumental area of the Roman forum and the city museum, inserted in the Lombard monastic complex of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia. Brescia is the ideal city for a visit on foot, take the four main squares of its historic center as a reference: Piazza del Mercato, Piazza della Vittoria, Piazza della Loggia and Piazza Paolo VI. In the latter you will have the opportunity to visit two cathedrals: the Duomo Vecchio, also called the Cathedral of the Rotunda, and the Duomo Nuovo. Eating in Brescia will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting parts of your trip: don't miss a taste of the typical dishes of the area, including polenta, the queen of Lombard cuisine, which cannot be renounced. You will find a suitable version for all tastes: with cod, with mushrooms, with vegetables or, if you are a meat lover, with pork sauce. The numerous square meters of public greenery that dot the city will also allow you to spend relaxing afternoons outdoors during the summer: the largest is the Parco delle Colline, but neither do the Parco Tarello or the Parco del Castello, which offer a view of fascinating glimpses of the historic centre. For a day of shopping in Brescia, on the other hand, we recommend the itinerary that starts from Corso Magenta, passes through Corso Cavour and continues along Corso Zanardelli and its numerous shops under the arcades. A few minutes' walk from Piazza della Vittoria you will find Corso Garibaldi and the ancient Torre della Pallata, for shopping with a boho-chic atmosphere and an international touch, given the numerous ethnic clubs that populate it. Brescia is also characterized by its proximity to the largest Italian lake, Lake Garda. A destination not to be missed for those wishing to spend a weekend in the midst of nature, strolling along the numerous panoramic itineraries. You will be able to fully enjoy the lake experience while also pampering your palate with dishes that only fresh water can offer: eels, tench and carp are the basis of many local dishes. For fun lovers Brescia also offers constant connections with the amusement parks, Gardaland above all, for an experience that will amuse the little ones but also their companions! Pack your bags and organize your train journey now to find out what is hidden behind one of the proudest cities in Italy. What are you waiting for? Buy your Italo ticket for Brescia!
